11 Days Cultural Tour of West and Central Bhutan.

Day01. Fly into Paro International Airport.

  • Visit the National Museum, which would be a great introduction before you start your exploration into the country.
  • Ease off in the evening/ visit the Rinpoung Dzong.

Day 02. Paro to Thimphu (53 kms, 1hr).

  •  Along the route, visit the Tamchogang Lhakhang.
  • Three types of stupa at the confluence of Pa Chhu and the Wang Chhu.
  • Semtokha Dzong, a 17th century fortress.

Entering Thimphu, the capital city with a population of 100,000 , it is like no other capital-the valley is unique, displaying harmony of tradition and modernity. There are no traffic lights and policemen direct traffic at intersections. Yet it is the biggest city in the country and seat of the government as well as the main hub of commerce in the country.

Day 03. Thimphu Sightseeing.

  • Visit the Memorial Chorten, built in memory of the third king.
  • Kuenselphodrang, Giant Buddha Statue, one of the largest Buddha statues in the world.
  • Changangkha Lhakhang, one of the oldest temple in Thimphu.
  • Takin Reserve, which showcases the National Animal of Bhutan, along with some species of deer.
  • Institute of Traditional Medicines, where the ancient art of Bhutanese healing system called Sowa Rigpa is still practiced.

Day 04. Thimphu Sightseeing.

  • Drive to Dodena, hike to Tango or Cheri monastery.
  • Jungshi Handmade Paper Factory, where you can see the traditional way of making papers from bark of Daphne plants. Bhutan in ancient days was the biggest supplier of paper in the Himalayan region for printing religious scriptures and prayers.
  • Visit the Gagyel Lhendup Weaving Centre to see the women weaving, for an exemplary of Bhutanese textiles.

Day 05. Thimphu to Punakha. (77kms, 3.5hrs).

 After breakfast drive to Punakha, the journey takes 3.5hrs, over the Dochula pass 3,0505m, stop for mountain views and if time permitting visit the Druk Wangyal Lhakhang.

  • After lunch, a short hike to Chimmi Lhakang, well known for its fertility rights.
  • Later visit the Punthang Dechen Phodrang.

Day06. Punakha to Bumthang. (170kms, 7hrs).

Get back on the road after an early breakfast to Trongsa, after lunch

  • Visit either the Watch Tower turned Museum.
  • Continue your journey to Bumthang for another 2 hours.

Day 07. Bumthang Sightseeing.

  • Jamba Lhakhang, first Buddhist temple in the country.
  • Chakhar Lhakhang, used as the palace of Sindu Raja in the 7th century, but now renovated.
  • Kurjey Lhakhang, the site where Guru Rinpoche meditated and left his body imprint on the rock.
  • Hike to Tamshing lhakhang on the other side of the Chamkhar Chhu 1.5kms. 
  • Visit the Mebar Tsho (Burning/Flaming Lake), from where Terton Pema Lingpa rediscovered terma’s (religious treasures).

Day08. Bumthang to Phobjikha. (154kms, 5.5hrs).

Drive through Trongsa over the Pele La pass into Phobjikha valley,

  • Visit the Gangtey Sangacholing monastery, the only Nyingmapa monastery in the western part of Bhutan, where Pema Lingpa’s tradition of teachings known as Peling is taught.
  • Then time permitting, do the nature trail hike amidst the pristine environment (4kms).

Day 09. Phobjikha to Paro. (135kms, 5hrs).

Full day driving over the Lawala Pass and Dochula Pass into Thimphu and to Paro.

  • In the evening visit the Dumtse lhakhang, and stroll around the town.

Day10. Hike to Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest Temple). It takes 5-6hrs for the round trip.

Start the hike early in the morning, so by the time the sun is strong you will be high up walking in the woods.

  • In the afternoon visit the ruins of Drukgyal dzong.
  • Visit the Kyichu Lhakhang, a 7th century temple.

Day 11. Fly out to your next destination.
